Project Update 09-25-2026 1920 1080 Washington Bridge Rebuild

In-water construction continues at the Washington Bridge Rebuild project during daytime hours. Crews are also continuing foundation work for the west abutment.

We are installing 32 drilled shafts that will form the foundation of the new bridge. Each shaft will extend approximately 130 feet to bedrock, creating a support system for the bridge’s piers and abutments. At present, six drilled shafts have been installed and concrete placed inside them. Vibration and noise monitoring as well as erosion control are in place.

Expect the closures of up to two lanes for preventative bridge maintenance on I-195 East over the Washington Bridge, Sunday-Thursday nights, September 27-October 1, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Exits 2B, 2C and 2D off I-195 East will remain open. We’ll also have up to two lanes closed on I-195 West over the Washington Bridge, Sunday-Thursday nights, September 27-October 1, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Eastbound and westbound preventative bridge maintenance operations will be on separate nights as weather permits.

Bridge preservation work is also scheduled at the Providence River (Iway) Bridge. It will involve up to two lanes closed on I-195 West, from just before the Iway Bridge to just after Exit 1B (Eddy Street), and on I-95 North, from just before Thurbers and Allens avenues to the I-195 split, Sunday-Thursday nights, September 27-October 1, and October 4-8, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
