This past Wednesday, June 10, Governor McKee announced the start of in-water construction during a ceremony off Gano Street in Providence for the Washington Bridge Rebuild. Construction will take place during daytime hours. Crews also are continuing work on establishing a construction platform in the river on the Providence shoreline to support foundation work.
Crews began installing the first of 32 drilled shafts that will form the foundation of the new bridge. Each shaft will extend approximately 130 feet to bedrock, creating a support system for the bridge’s piers and abutments. Vibration and noise monitoring as well as erosion control are in place.
Daytime survey work will require one lane of alternating traffic on Gano Street under the Washington Bridge, Wednesday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday night, June 21, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., expect right then possibly left lane closures for bridge work on I-195 East and West, from Broadway to Gano Street.
Bridge preservation work for the Providence River Bridge is scheduled next week from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. along I-195 West. On Sunday night, June 14, from the Providence River Bridge to the merge with I-95 North, expect a right lane closure over the Providence River Bridge and a left lane closure over the ramp leading to I-95 North. On Monday night, June 15, expect a single left lane closure at 9 p.m., and the two middle lanes to be closed at 10 p.m., before and after the Providence River Bridge. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, before the Providence River Bridge and after Exit 1B leading to I-95 South, one left lane will close at 9 p.m., the second starting at 10 p.m.
The following week, this bridge preservation work also requires various lane closures on I-195 West, from just before the bridge to after Exit 1B, Sunday and Monday nights, June 21 and 22, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Motorists can also expect a right lane closure for bridge preservation work on I-95 North, from just before Exit 36A to the end of the Providence River Bridge on I-195 East, Tuesday night, June 23, and a left lane closure on I-195 East, from Exit 36A on I-95 South to the end of the Providence River Bridge, Wednesday night, June 24 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Center lane closures are also expected for this bridge preservation work on I-95 South, from Exit 36A to the end of the Providence River Bridge on I-195 East, and on I-95 North, just prior to Exit 36A to the end of the Providence River Bridge on I-195, Thursday night, June 25 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
