Project Update 12-19-2025 1920 1080 Washington Bridge Rebuild

Construction-related activities on the new Washington Bridge have been ongoing since June, with design, soil sampling, geographic surveying, permit applications, and the ordering of materials. Over the next two weeks, crews using boring equipment will be operating on the East Providence shore and on the water. No lane closures are required for this work.

Weigh-in-motion system maintenance will require the closure of up to two lanes on I-195 East from the Providence River Bridge to the Washington Bridge, and on I-195 West from the Washington Bridge to Exit 1C (South Main Street), Sunday – Tuesday nights, December 21 – 23, from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., weather permitting.

Crews are also scheduled to perform bridge preventative maintenance work on I-195 West on the Washington Bridge on Monday and Tuesday night, December 22 – 23, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This will require up to two lanes to be closed while the work is performed.

Also on Tuesday night, December 23, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., maintenance crews are scheduled to sweep I-195 in both directions in a moving operation from I-95 to the Massachusetts line.

Looking ahead to the week after Christmas, we’re scheduled to close up to two lanes for continued bridge preventative maintenance activities on Monday and Tuesday night, December 29 – 30, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The approved in-water demolition has been completed to the required elevations. Next week, demolition crews will be demobilizing equipment from the project site and doing post-completion inspections. Turbidity curtains will remain in place during this time.
