Construction-related activities on the new Washington Bridge have been ongoing since June with design, soil sampling, geographic surveying, permit applications and the ordering of materials. In the next two weeks, crews using boring equipment will be operating on the East Providence shore and on the water. No lane closures are required for this work. We also will have alternating one-way traffic to take soil samples for design work in East Providence on Potter Street, from Freeborn Avenue to School Street, Monday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Weather permitting, brief alternating lane closures are planned on I-195 East and West over the Washington Bridge for weigh-in-motion system maintenance, Sunday night, November 16, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Motorists can also expect the closure of up to two lanes on the deck of the Washington Bridge along I-195 East and West, weather permitting, for bridge preservation work, Sunday-Thursday nights, November 16-20, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
We need to close the two right lanes on I-195 West, from Exit 1C to Exit 1A, over the Providence River Bridge, and the on-ramp from I-195 West to I-95 North, for pavement repairs for three consecutive nights, Sunday-Tuesday nights, November 16-18. One lane will close at 8 p.m., and the second lane and the on-ramp from I-195 West to I-95 North will be closed from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. the following day. During the I-95 North ramp closure, RIDOT will post a signed detour using I-95 South to Exit 35, then taking a left onto Thurbers Avenue, then a second left to return to I-95 North. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, November 19 and 20, we’ll close the left lane at 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. each morning on I-195 West, from Exit 1C to Exit 1A, over the Providence River Bridge.
Alternating lane closures are also expected for a bridge inspection on the ramp from Route 1A to I-195 East, Tuesday-Thursday, November 18, 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The approved in-water demolition work continues, Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. No work is currently planned after 6 p.m. to avoid any disruptive noise during evening hours. In accordance with CRMC guidelines, debris will be removed from the river as work progresses, placed onto barges and towed to land for transfer into trucks for offsite disposal. Temporary protective sheeting and turbidity curtains are in place.
